Mission Statement

The Mission of the Multicultural and Gender Studies program at Butte College is to is to engage students in learning about different cultures, ethnicities and identities and enable students to evaluate the major concepts, theories, and perspectives in this area while acknowledging individual experience, human diversity and the social realm of culture and diverse perspectives while developing skills in analysis, critical thinking and communication.

Program Description

The Multicultural and Gender Studies program provides students with diverse cultural perspectives in a global world.  The discipline is an invaluable opportunity for students of all backgrounds and orientations to find a place and viewpoint that validates or expands their understanding of the world community.

With the passing of AB1460 in California, Ethnic Studies (currently called Multicultural and Gender Studies), many California Community Colleges are moving toward the creattion of an AA-T degree with a spepcific emphasis on Native American studies, African American studies, Asian American studies and Chicoano/Latino/Latina studies. We anticipate an expansion of enrollemenst in this area as students prepare for transfer and/or current CSU students seek affordable options to meet this criteria witin their graduate educational goals.

Standards/Goals for Student Achievement (All Other Departments)

The MCGS Department is planning on supporting the impactful change with the creation of the CSU Area F GE in Ethnic Studies. Our faculty have been notified they may optionally participate in the C-ID TMC Faculty Discipline Review Group (FDRG) for the development of a new AA-T in Ethnic Studies.

2. Supporting Student, Faculty, and Staff Success through professional workshops and conferences as well as individual student consultation and advising: By college wide support through Student Services and diversity targeted workshops open to Butte college studnets, faculty and staff.
 
6. Enhancing a Culture of Equity and Inclusiveness: By offering a range of courses to meet the AB 1460 requirements with specific emphasis on Native American studies, African American studies, Asian American studies and Chicoano/Latino/Latina studies.
 

Program Review

Per the recommendation of Program Review, Multicultural Studies has transformed to Multicultural and Gender Studies with an expanded curriculum. A multi-disciplinary team was assembled, with a goal of constructing a major fashioned after CSU Chico.
New courses titled Arab American Studies and LGBTQ+ studies are now being developed.
A Full time fauclty hire to guide and direct the program was also recommended.

Department Goals

1. Connect MCGS classes to new CSU Area F Ethnic Studies GE requirement. 
2. Implement research on creation of Introduction to Native American Studies course. 
3. Research needed for number of CSU Area F GE sections.
